Day 3 - Castles

Frog Eyes!

It was a slow morning due to hard partying last night. I crawled out of bed and took ibuprofen and a shower. Torsten made a late breakfast for us. He asked if I wanted “frog eyes”. Um, excuse me? Are you serious? He then tells me I taught him how to make ‘em. I don’t think so… he then explains what they are and I laugh. ‘You mean one-eyed Petes?’ I asked. He said, "Is that what you call them?" Yup. We had some delicious one-eyed Petes. Mmmm. Love the German breakfast!

It was a gorgeous sunny day so we decided to do a road trip to some castles south of Munich. The first castle is Neuschwanstein Castle. This castle was the inspiration for Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle. Built by crazy King Ludwig II in 1869 it was never finished before he died in 1886.

We hiked up the hill to the castle. It is so very stunning.

The village of Hohenschwangau below the castle.
We hiked to the second castle, Hohenschwangau Castle which is on the other hill. This castle was finished in 1837 and where King Ludwig II spent his childhood summers.

You can see Neuschwanstein Castle in the distance.

We then had dinner outside at the bottom of the hill next to a lake. The sun was setting and it was very relaxing. We were surprised at the quality of the food. It was one of the best meals I’ve had in a long time. Torsten explained Bavarian food is very good but simple. This restaurant had delicious complex Bavarian food.

Fresh warm bread with olive oil and salt,
duck fat with crunchy onions and cream cheese
with some green stuff. Delicious!
Pear soup with blue cheese stuffed croutons! Amazing!

Ox Tail soup

Beef with pâté on a bed of sauerkraut and mashed potatoes with truffle oil.

Lamb with amazing goodness.

Duck with orange glacee on fennel and spaetzle.
